Why Fall Prevention Matters
Falls are a leading cause of injury, hospitalization, and loss of independence in older adults. Most falls are preventable with simple, consistent safety measures.
Improve the Home Environment (Most Important)
- Remove clutter from walkways
- Secure or remove loose rugs
- Keep floors dry and clean
- Use non-slip mats in bathrooms and kitchens
- Ensure cords are out of walking paths
- Install grab bars in bathrooms
- Use handrails on stairs
- Keep frequently used items within reach
Ensure Proper Lighting
- Use bright lighting in all rooms
- Add night lights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms
- Keep a light within reach of the bed
- Reduce glare and shadows
Encourage Safe Footwear
- Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes with proper fit
- Avoid walking in socks or loose slippers
- Avoid worn-out shoes without tread
Proper footwear significantly reduces the risk of falls.
Support Safe Mobility
- Use mobility aids (cane, walker) as ordered
- Ensure devised are property sized
- Encourage slow position changes (sit + stand)
- Avoid rushing
⚠️Do not let clients “furniture walk” unless specifically trained and approved.
Strength, Balance & Movement
- Encourage regular movement as tolerated
- Support balance and strength exercises
- Sitting to standing exercises
- Gentle walking
- Range-of-motion activities
- Avoid prolonged bed or chair rest unless ordered
Medication & Health Awareness
- REPORT dizziness, weakness, or confusion
- Watch for side effects from medications
- Ensure vision and hearing aids are used as prescribed
Bathroom Safety (High Risk Area)
- Used raised toilet seats if ordered
- Install grab bars near toilet and shower
- Use shower chairs when appropriate
- Never leave high-risk clients unattended
What Caregivers SHOULD NOT Do
❌ Do NOT rush the client
❌ Do NOT leave unstable clients unattended
