RN Delegation

Nurse delegation allows caregivers to complete tasks that would normally be completed by a nurse to patients that are stable and predictable; so that they can remain in their community settings.

Since delegation may only be done by a Registered nurse, many communities contract for this requirement to be met — as outlined in WAC 246-840-910 through 970. The RN provides education on how to safely preform a patient specific task and the caregiver is able to complete the task under indirect supervision in the nurse’s absence. The nurse reviews the skills of the caregiver and completes a patient assessment and supervisory visit at least every 90 days or more frequently if necessary.

Washington State developed this program to protect vulnerable adults that may not have the physical mobility or mental capacity to manage their medications and/or medical needs without assistance. It is required to have written orders from the primary care provider for nurse delegated tasks and medications, for both prescription and over the counter medications.
